Granting admin access to your Wix website is a necessary step when working with a marketing consultant, web designer, or developer. But it's also critical to ensure that this process is done securely. In this guide, we'll walk through the steps to safely give someone admin access and explain how hiring a marketing consultant (like myself) can elevate your online presence.
Step 1: Create a Backup of Your Website
Before making any changes or giving admin access, it's always a good idea to create a backup.
Wix allows you to save and restore versions of your site, so in case of any unwanted changes, you can always revert back.
How to create a backup:
Log in to your Wix dashboard.
Go to Site Actions > Site History.
Click Save Version to store a current backup of your website.
This way, you'll be able to recover your site if anything goes wrong or if you want to undo any changes that may be made.
Step 2: Navigate to Roles & Permissions
Now that your site is backed up, you can proceed to grant admin access. Wix makes it easy to manage roles and permissions for different collaborators on your site.
Log in to your Wix account.
In the dashboard, click on Settings in the left-hand menu.
Scroll down and select Roles & Permissions.
Step 3: Add a New Contributor
Under the Roles & Permissions section, you can add a new user by entering their email address.
Steps:
Click the Invite People button.
Enter the email address of the person you're granting access to.
Choose the role of Admin if they need full control (or Editor if their permissions can be more limited).
Click Send Invite.
For example, if you're bringing me on board as your marketing consultant, providing admin access would allow me to manage SEO settings, integrate tools like Google Analytics, and make necessary edits to optimize your site for better performance.
Step 4: Choose the Appropriate Permissions
Wix offers several different roles, including Admin, Editor, Blog Writer, and others. Be sure to select the correct role based on the tasks the person will be performing. Admin access should only be given to people you trust, as they can make critical changes to the website, including managing payments and site settings.
If you're working with me, full admin access is helpful to make strategic updates to your website, such as:
Managing ad campaigns
Setting up tracking pixels for Facebook and Google Ads
Installing SEO tools for better visibility on search engines
Step 5: Monitor Access and Make Updates When Needed
Once you've granted someone admin access, you should regularly monitor your website's activity.
If at any point you feel uncomfortable with the changes being made, you can always revoke access or change their role to a more limited one.
Wix lets you track recent activity on your dashboard, so you’ll be able to see what updates have been made.
Step 6: Secure Your Website with Two-Step Verification
To add an extra layer of security to your Wix account, it's a good idea to enable two-step verification (2FA). This feature makes it harder for unauthorized users to access your account, even if they have your password.
How to enable 2FA:
Go to your Wix dashboard.
Click on Account Settings > Security.
Enable Two-Step Verification by following the on-screen instructions.
